The Infrared Astronomy Satellite (ISO)

Dr Jean Clavel
ISO Science Operations Manager, ESA, Villafranca, Spain

Professor Peter Clegg
Department of Physics, Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, UK

Tuesday 07 May 1996

The main characteristics of the ISO spacecraft and its scientific payload will be presented by Jean Clavel. The events that took place since its launch on 17 November 1995 will also be summarised.

Peter Clegg will outline the astronomical objectives of the ISO mission and will present some of the first scientific results.

Jean Clavel was born in 1951 in France. He received his PhD in Astrophysics in 1977. From 1977 to 1980 he worked with the European Space Agency (ESA) as Resident Astronomer for the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE). In 1980 he obtained a position as staff astronomer at Meudon Observatory, France. From 1984 to 1991 he worked as ESA IUE deputy observatory manager and, in 1991, joined the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) project in ESTEC (NL). Since 1994, he has held the post of ISO Science Operations Manager and has the overall responsibility for all science operations with the ISO spacecraft. His main field of research is with Active Galactic Nuclei and quasars.

Peter Clegg was born in 1939 in England. He read Natural Philosophy at Oxford before taking a PhD in Solid State Physics at the University of Reading. He changed field in 1963, moving to Queen Mary College to do research in far-infrared astronomy. As well as making ground-based observations, he flew a balloon experiment which made the first measurement of the spectrum of the cosmic microwave background radiation. He was a member of the science team of the pioneering Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) and is Principal Investigator for the Long-Wavelength Spectrometer on the ISO satellite.
