The space industry is at a period of significant restructuring. The programmes that the space agencies have been promoting are, to a considerable measure, in crisis. In this lecture a personal perspective is given of these events. A retrospective view will be given as to how we have arrived at our present position, and what this might bode for the future.

Professor John Stark holds the chair of Aeronautical Engineering at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, where he is also the head of the Department of Engineering. He is the current Chairman of the Royal Aeronautical Society's Space Group.
